How I Became a Doula: A Love Story That Turned Into a Calling
“Can I tell you something? I didn’t set out to become a doula… it actually started with falling in love.”
Celebrating World Doula Week
Happy World Doula Week 🤍
I can’t think of a better way to start this week than by sharing how I became a doula—because my journey into birth work didn’t begin with a career plan.
It began with love, family, and a path I didn’t even realize I was walking.
Where It All Began
A couple weeks ago, my husband and I celebrated our anniversary, and it got me reflecting on where this journey really started.
When we said “I do,” we were simply beginning our life together. We dreamed about the future, trusted God with our path, and had no idea where that path would lead.
Before long, our family began to grow.
One baby.
Then another.
And another.
Over the years, I experienced six pregnancies and six births. And each one changed me in ways I can’t fully put into words.
They stretched me.
They shaped me.
They showed me just how incredible the female body is—and how sacred the process of pregnancy and childbirth truly is.
At the time, I didn’t know anything about doula support.
I was just a mom having babies.
The Questions That Changed Everything
But then something started happening.
People began asking me questions.
It started with friends… then friends of friends… then women from church, neighbors—even people I barely knew.
They would ask:
What should I expect during labor?
Do I have options during birth?
How do I prepare for childbirth?
What helped you through your births?
And the truth is—I didn’t feel like an expert.
But I loved the questions.
Every time someone came to me, I found myself going deeper. I would read articles, research evidence-based birth practices, and learn more about the choices women actually have during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum recovery.
And I loved sharing what I learned.
There was something inside me that came alive when another woman felt more confident… more informed… more empowered about her birth experience.
That’s when everything began to shift.
Birth Is More Than Medical
I started to realize something that changed how I saw everything:
Birth is not just a medical event.
It’s emotional.
It’s physical.
It’s spiritual.
It’s transformational.
And women deserve to feel supported through every part of it with compassionate, continuous labor support.
The Turning Point
In 2018, I took the leap and enrolled in my doula training.
And that decision changed everything.
Because once I started learning… I didn’t want to stop.
I became deeply passionate about understanding the body and how it works in birth. I studied movement and positioning in labor, how balance in the body can impact the birth experience, and the many ways we can support physiological birth.
I dove into:
The intricacies of VBAC support (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean)
Hypnobirthing and the power of the mind during labor
Spinning Babies techniques for optimal fetal positioning
The Body Ready Method for pregnancy and birth preparation
The more I learned, the more I realized how much education, preparation, and doula support can truly transform a birth experience.
What I Do Today as a Doula
Today, I have the incredible honor of supporting families through some of the most meaningful moments of their lives.
As a birth and postpartum doula, my work includes:
Birth doula support
Postpartum doula care
Lactation support and breastfeeding education
Childbirth education classes
Bodywork for pregnancy and postpartum recovery
Mentoring new doulas
One of the greatest joys in my work is guiding women who feel called into doula work. Watching them grow in confidence and step into their purpose is something I never take for granted.
Looking Back: A Path That Was Always There
When I look back now, I can see it so clearly.
None of it was random.
Not my marriage.
Not my babies.
Not the questions.
Not the late-night research.
Every step mattered.
It was a path unfolding—one I couldn’t fully see at the time.
A love story that slowly grew into a calling.
Supporting Families Through Pregnancy, Birth, and Postpartum
Today, my heart is simple:
To help families feel informed, confident, and supported through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care.
Because every birth story matters.
And sometimes, the most beautiful journeys begin in the simplest way—with love.
